If you follow us on social media you may have seen our Hextravaganza pattern made with Hollow Cubes. This fun project is simple to put together using the Hollow Cube 60 technique sheet and the Hextravaganza pattern that comes with the Star 60 tool.

To make this project you'll need to make six Hollow Cubes. By choosing three sharply contrasting colors that also contrast with the background fabric, the quilt will take on a dramatic 3D effect. Follow the steps on the technique sheet through Step 11, which is the final cube assembly.

Deb made a fantastic tutorial video for this technique. She walks you through each step of the process all the way through the cube assembly. There's even a small example of this project at the end of the video.

Once you have your cubes completed, you'll need some background fabric to make companion triangles. To figure out the size companion triangles you'll need, take the finished unit size from the technique sheet (each framed triangle, not the finished size of the cube!) and locate the Star 60 Finished Unit Size on the chart that comes with the tool instructions. Follow the row over to the Oversize Companion Triangle Strip size.

We suggest laying out the completed cubes with the companion triangles in a hexagon shape to make sure the cubes are oriented correctly. They should look like a light is shining down on top of the cube.

Follow Step 27 in the tool instructions to add oversized companion triangles to the completed Hollow Cubes. Stitch the companion triangles to each cube.

You can follow Step 3 on the Hextravaganza pattern that comes with the tool instructions to construct and trim down the triangles. Follow Step 6 to turn the triangles into a hexagon.

The final step is to add half rectangle triangles to the hexagon using steps 35-37 of the Star 60 tool instructions. If you're making a large project, Deb tells you how to determine the size of the half rectangle triangles in the original Star 60 tutorial. Go to 22:15 in the video to see Deb demonstrate this process.

Now you have your own Hollow Cube Hextravaganza project! Here's another great finished example from our booth at International Quilt Festival.

We hope you enjoy making your own version of this unique quilt.
