Flock of Birds is one of our newest technique sheets that uses the Tucker Trimmer® II and III to make this popular unit. If you’ve ever used our Shaded Four Patch or Triangle Pizazz technique sheets, then making this unit should feel familiar. And while the techniques are similar, we have a few tips to help you be successful with your Flock of Birds units!
Everything you need to make this unit is listed right on the technique sheet. As you work through the process, use these tips for extra help for some of the unfamiliar steps. Following the pressing instructions will ensure that you have perfect units! Start by gathering your squares and rectangles.
One of the most important steps in the process is making sure the Center Triangle is the right size. Start by making the Pieced Squares following the steps on the technique sheet. Now it’s time to trim just the Center Triangle.
On the chart there is a Pieced Square Trim Size listed in the last column. This is the number that you’ll use to trim the Center Triangle. Line up the Tucker Trimmer® II or III on the unit and trim. Only trim the Center Triangle, not the whole Pieced Square!
Once you’ve done that you can now stitch the Pieced Squares onto the Small Rectangles. You’ll want to position and stitch them exactly as shown to make sure your units come out accurately.
Time to stitch the units together and give them a good press. The technique sheet says to snip the seam allowance at the halfway point. We like to fold our unit in half along the long edge and snip right at the fold. Then follow the technique sheet for pressing.
Once you've pressed the unit, you'll need to mark two stitching lines on the wrong side of the that pass through the seam intersections. Use a ruler with a good 45° angle on it to help you with this step.
You’ll follow the rest of the steps on the technique sheet to finish making the units, then trim them down using the Tucker Trimmer® III. At the end you have two perfect Flock of Bird units!
